Namibia Explorer - Tailor Made Self Drive

Highlights * Fish River Canyon * Lüderitz * Tiras Mountains * Sossusvlei Dunes * Swakopmund * Safari in Etosha Park * AfriCat Foundation * Windhoek

DAY 1

Arrive Windhoek, collect your rental vehicle and spend a night in the city. Namibia’s roads are often long and can at times be bumpy but there is little traffic and driving around the country is a great way to explore at your own pace. We recommend a 4x4 vehicle.

DAY 2

The road trip begins as you head south to the red dunes of the Kalahari Desert. Drive time approx. 3 hours.

DAYS 3-4

Drive through desert landscapes. En route you’ll see a Quiver Tree Forest – the pre-historic trees are great to photograph – and the labyrinth of massive boulders known as the Giant’s Playground. Your destination is Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world. Drive along the northern fringes of the canyon where there are various viewing points. Drive time approx. 4½ hours.

DAY 5

Drive via the small historic village of Aus to Lüderitz, a town of old-world charm and German colonial architecture, for an overnight stay. Drive time approx. 4½ hours.

DAY 6

A scenic drive to the Tiras Mountains for the night. We suggest a stop at Kolmanskop – it’s a ghost town now but it gives a fascinating insight into the area’s great diamond boom. Drive time approx. 2½ hours.

DAYS 7-8

Prepare to be amazed as you drive through some of Namibia’s most spectacular scenery. Visit the Duwisib Castle en route to the dunes of Sossusvlei for 2 nights. We recommend rising early and heading to the dunes just after sunrise, when the light and colours are beautiful. Drive time approx. 3½ hours.

DAYS 9-10

Swap the desert dunes for the ocean with 2 nights in coastal Swakopmund. There are many activities available locally, from dolphin cruises to sand boarding. Drive time approx. 5 hours.

DAYS 11-12

Drive along the coast to the seal colony at Cape Cross then head inland and into the rocky Damaraland landscapes. Depending on your choice of lodge, activities locally may include rhino tracking or a drive in search of desert-adapted elephants. Drive time approx. 6 hours.

DAYS 13-14

Safari beckons! Your destination is Etosha National Park, Namibia’s premier wildlife area. Spend 2 days at a lodge inside the park. Drive time approx. 4 hours.

DAY 15

A final drive through the park and a night in a private game reserve. Drive time approx. 3 hours.

DAY 16

Drive south – your destination is the Okonjima Nature Reserve where you can visit the AfriCat foundation and learn about the conservation of Namibia’s carnivores. Drive time approx. 3½ hours.

DAY 17

Visit the Woodcarvers Market at Okahandja en route to Windhoek where your adventure ends. Drive time approx. 3 hours.

This is a sample itinerary which can be personalised for your requirements. The accommodation choices are up to you – we will happily make recommendations, based on your preferences and our personal experiences.
