Hwange National Park
Located in the north-west of the country, Hwange National Park is the largest game reserve in Zimbabwe, both in size and in the variety of birds and animals living here.
With an area of nearly 15,000km² its sheer size means that its scenery, vegetation and game vary hugely, ranging from the semi desert scrub on the edge of the Kalahari in the south, to forests, granite hills and valleys of mopane woodlands in the north.
The best time to spot the animals tends to be during the dry season (August to October) when the wildlife congregates around the shrunken water holes. Apart from elephant, game to be seen includes buffalo, lion, leopard, zebra, wild dog and over 430 species of birds.
Accesible by road from Victoria Falls or by light aircraft from elsewhere in the country.
