Safari & Adventure

Africa offers a wide variety of game viewing experiences, but there is much to experience beyond a traditional safari. Our quick highlights below cover some key information to help find which destination is right for you to satisfy cravings for wildlife, adventure, culture and excitement across this vast continent.

South Africa

The Rainbow Nation has it all. For an adventurous yet relaxing honeymoon, vibrant Cape Town and the nearby Cape Winelands with its picture-perfect vineyards make an outstanding start. Mountain backdrops and open roads make South Africa a perfect self-drive option, exploring at your leisure. Stunning coastlines adorn the Garden Route.  At each turn find pretty little towns with boutique accommodation and genuine warm hospitality. Thrill-seekers are catered for with many adventure activities throughout the country. Whether by bike, kayak, boat or bungee, you will always be left wanting more.

The Marine Big 5 offer an aquatic animal fix not found elsewhere, including world class whale watching. Then on land, find some of the best land-based safari options on the planet. From malaria-free Madikwe to the accessible Eastern Cape, there are plenty of options for those who don't want to take malaria medication. Big cat lovers will marvel at the game-rich Sabi Sands in the heart of the Kruger. Or for the ultimate in exclusivity, head to the remote wilderness of Tswalu in the Kalahari.

Southern hemisphere summers bring warmth and sunshine to Christmas in Cape Town and the Winelands, though the cooler winter months mean game viewing is at its peak over the June to October period. And when the evenings turn a little chilly, we suggest you snuggle up in front of a roaring fire with a glass of red wine or a hot chocolate laced with the local Amarula liqueur. South Africa really is a year-round destination and can be as active or relaxed as you want it to be.

Botswana

Botswana is a real safari enthusiasts dream. The landscape and activities ebb and flow with the waters in the Okavango Delta and protected Moremi Game Reserve, whilst the deserts and salt pans of the Kalahari provide a stunning contrast. Small lodges, remote wilderness locations and high-class service means Botswana is the perfect blend of romance and adventure. The most popular time to visit is over the UK summer - handily also peak wedding season. In Botswana this is winter time, but here it means clear blue skies, sensational game viewing and the full waterways of the Delta bringing exciting and unique activities such as exploring by boat and mokoro.

A short light aircraft flight whisks you to the desert pans, where you may get to meet meerkats or explore the shimmering salt flats. At other times of year, Botswana plays host to the second largest zebra migration, which few have even heard of, let alone witnessed. And tucked away in a remote corner of the country, the breathtaking Northern Tuli Game Reserve effortlessly combines outdoor adventures and starry sleepouts with exciting big game viewing. As with the rest of Africa, there is always something new to see at any time in beautiful Botswana.

Victoria Falls

Straddling Zambia and Zimbabwe, the might of 'The Smoke That Thunders' truly has to be seen to be believed. Water levels peak around May, when the spray is so intense that the best views are obtained by helicopter. From the many walkways, the finest views are observed from June to August, when medium-strength water flow means memories can be captured best on camera.

Year-round though, the area around the Falls has grown to be the adventure capital of Africa. White water rafting, bridge swings, bungee jumps, canoeing… the list goes on. The towns of Victoria Falls and Livingstone, either side of the Zambezi River border, offer everything from boutique guesthouses to full service hotels near the heart of the action. Alternatively, quiet riverside lodges upstream provide perfect havens to relax at the end of an action-packed day. The ease of connections to South Africa, Botswana and even Kenya make Victoria Falls an easy and exciting addition to many different trip options.

For the truly adventurous we can, of course, arrange beautiful trips in both neighbouring Zambia and Zimbabwe. We find these tend to appeal more to seasoned safari-goers but if this is you then we’d love to speak to you in more detail about these incredible wildlife destinations. Getting off-the-beaten-track opens up some of the most intimate experiences in Africa – from romantic sleepouts under the stars to authentic walking safaris deep in the wilderness.

Namibia

On the west coast of Africa, Namibia is open, dramatic and adventurous. It does not offer the traditional beach escape, either domestically or as an easily accessible combination due to its location. But for the couple looking to really escape everyday life, the contrast to home will rarely be felt more keenly. The vast distances mean you will need 2 to 3 weeks to do it justice. Even then you will always wish for more time. Drive times will typically be around 5 hours between stops, but a flying circuit is a possibility for those who want to maximise their time with some stunning aerial views. A genuine year round destination, but the warmest weather and best game viewing occur from May to October, so the perfect pairing to a UK summer wedding.

Intrepid couples will be rewarded with everything from sand dunes at Sossusvlei, to shipwrecks on the Skeleton Coast.  Fish River Canyon in the far south is the second largest in the world, whilst in the north Etosha National Park and Damaraland offer the traditional game and unique desert wildlife. Namibia certainly has its share of high-end lodges, but the focus here is more on the amazing scenery and feeling of absolute escapism that few other destinations offer. Speak to our knowledgeable team about the exciting possibilities such as high end glamping camps or unique romantic experiences such as a sleepout under the stars in a custom designed safari Landcruiser.

Kenya

Romance and Kenya go hand in hand. Stunning National Parks throughout the country and warm, friendly people have long made for an engaging combination. The Masai Mara is rightly world-famous. Whilst the Great Migration is only in town for a few months over our summer, the Mara never disappoints, with a high concentration of game year-round. You simply can’t go wrong with Kenya – even the green season months of April and May are rich with game if you are prepared to experience some dramatic skies and occasional downpour - but there are many hidden gems away from the most famous park of all.

From the mountains of Laikipia to the rolling hills of Amboseli and Tsavo, this is the scenery which shapes the soul. There is incredible wildlife viewing right across the country and many opportunities to experience it in unique ways. The African Pride team can suggest itineraries with horseback safari rides, cycling adventures, camel treks and of course hot-air balloon trips. For an exceptional all-round experience, Kenya delivers in spades.

And when weddings are typically planned a long way out, your honeymoon may just allow for the ultimate in unique experiences – waking up to feed the giraffe at iconic Giraffe Manor. But you have to be up early for this one, and we don’t just mean for breakfast. Space is extremely limited, even usually a year or more in advance.

Tanzania

Few words conjure up the magic of safari like the Serengeti. These 'endless plains' play host to the migrating wildebeest and zebra across most of the year, but even when the herds move on they always leave fantastic resident game behind. It means that, outside of the long rains of April/May, a honeymoon here at any time will leave you breathless. Combining the Serengeti with the Ngorongoro Crater – home to some of the densest concentration of wildlife on the plant – gives an animal fix without rival.

Beyond the plains, Tanzania offers less well-known but equally stunning possibilities. Unwind on a slow safari around Tarangire and Lake Manyara, or experience the raw, untouched wilderness regions of Nyerere and Ruaha. Want some R&R with a real difference? Head to the Western Reserves and explore the pristine wilderness of Katavi National Park, trek Chimpanzees in the Mahale mountains then enjoy sundowners on an uncrowded beach on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Oh, and did we mention Kilimanjaro? A honeymoon may not be the time for a week-long trek to the summit, but chances are you will be rewarded with a magnificent view of Africa’s highest peak at some point during your journey.

Rwanda

A hidden honeymoon gem, Rwanda may be tiny but packs a mighty punch. Now offering a true East African Big 5 safari in Akagera alongside its more famous primate tracking activities, this is home to boutique luxury. For a super stylish experience, we can suggest stunning high end accommodation options around the country which reflect Rwandan heritage and culture in their design. If you prefer to focus more on the experiences, our team can suggest more budget friendly options so you can still tick off a real bucket-list wish – spending a peaceful hour with the majestic Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat.

The southern rainforests of Nyungwe allow you to combine activities like chimpanzee treks with treetop canopy walks, then spend downtime to just unwind and connect with nature. The main dry seasons of June to September and December to February - when Gorilla treks are less strenuous and the game viewing in Akagera is at its peak - mean it ties in beautifully for many honeymooners. But don’t leave it to the last minute to plan for Rwanda – with just 96 permits per day for the Gorillas, exclusivity is guaranteed.

Madagascar

Africa's biodiversity hotspot is the world’s 4th largest island. Famous for its unique wildlife – particularly the many lemur species - this fascinating destination also offers some truly stunning beaches for the more intrepid honeymoon couple. Choose between ultra-luxury beach properties and island escapes or more rustic and charming retreats on golden sands nestled at the edge of the lush forests.

Madagascar offers so much diversity that a honeymoon spent here alone offers a special combination of activity and relaxation that is unrivalled anywhere else on the planet. Our team will help plan a privately guided trip for you that strikes the perfect balance between rest and exploration, allowing for the distances involved. It’s not the easiest beach extension to a traditional safari elsewhere in Africa, but with opportunities to connect to Johannesburg it is possible with our expert planning. We think some time relaxing on the local beaches at the end of a trip around the country is ideal though.

Temperatures are stable year-round, though expect to see some rain at any time – it is called rainforest for a reason! The wetter, more humid months are typically December to March, though most heavy rain occurs overnight. September to November is usually the warmest, driest time for beach lovers. April to June also combines middling temperatures with a relative lack of humidity. July and August are the coolest months, but perfect for exploring the interior of this extraordinary island destination.
