DAY 1

Arrive in Antananarivo and transfer to your hotel  the Palissandre for an overnight stay. Depending on flight arrival times, enjoy a guided tour of the old city and the quaint Upper Town with its narrow cobbled streets and traditional Malagasy houses built entirely of wood.

DAYS 2-3

Fly to Morondava for 2 nights at the Palissandre Cote Ouest. Cruise through the mangroves on a pirogue, a traditional sailboat, to a coastal village where you’ll see the Vezo, semi-nomadic fishermen, return with their daily catch. Drive along the Alley of the Baobabs and visit the Kirindy Reserve. Some of Madagascar’s most extraordinary creatures including Madame Berthe’s lemur, the world’s smallest primate, and the nocturnal fossa, Madagascar’s largest carnivore, inhabit the forest.

DAY 4

Head inland to the highlands, passing through rice fields, mountains and traditional villages. Spend a night in Antsirabe at the Couleur Cafe, a town where the main mode of transport is the ‘pousse-pousse’, a hand-pulled rickshaw.

DAY 5

Continue south to Ambositra, a centre for Malagasy handicrafts, in particular the intricate woodcarvings of the Zafimaniry Art. See some of the artisans at work before driving on to the rainforest of Ranomafana for a tea plantation visit, and finally Fianarantsoa for a city tour and an overnight stay at the Tsaara Guest House.

DAYS 6-7

The landscape changes to dry bush and semi-desert as you head to Isalo for 2 nights at Isalo Rock Lodge. Stop en route in Ambalavao, a town known for its Antemoro paper mills and enjoy a day walking and hiking in Isalo National Park, with its canyons and waterfalls – keep an eye open for the ring-tailed lemur.

DAY 8

Drive to the coast for an overnight stay at the Bakuba Concept Lodge in Toliara, passing through an area known for its gemstones. Visit an open pit sapphire mine then onto Zombitse-Vohibasia Park, home to lemur species and a host of endemic birds.

DAYS 9-11

Cross the mouth of the Onilahy River by boat to Anakao for a stay at Ankao Ocean Lodge. If you’re travelling between June and September, you might see migrating whales. Visit Tsimanampetsotsa Park with its huge lake and sail to the little island of Nosy Ve.

DAY 12

Fly back to Antananarivo for a final night a the Palissandre.

DAY 13

Deoart Madagascar for your return trip home, or extend your stay in Madagascar.
