KwaZulu Natal - Game

The wide variety of habitat, from coastal wetlands to open bushveld, supports a huge diversity of wildlife.

Easily accessible from either Durban, Johannesburg or the airport at Richards Bay this area is home to some of the most spectacular game viewing in the country.

Some of the biggest conservation success stories are from KwaZulu Natal.  For example, in the early 1900's the entire world population of white rhino was around 20, all of them living in this area.  Today the population in South Africa is about 6,000.  Incidentally, the name 'white' rhino has nothing to do with the colour of the animal, it is a mispronunciation of the Dutch word 'wijd', meaning 'wide', referring to the white rhino's wide mouth (compared to the black rhino's narrow, pointy mouth).
