KwaZulu Natal - Drakensberg

Originally called uKhalambra, or the 'Barrier of Spears'

The Drakensberg mountain range and the surrounding area is woven into the very fabric of South African history.

The famous 'Amphitheatre' (pictured above) in the Royal Natal National Park was the setting for the film 'Zulu' and exudes an unmistakable presence and power.

Walking and climbing are well catered for, but do take local advice on the conditions and terrain as during the summer there can be sudden heavy thunderstorms.  The drive up to the Sani Pass into the beautiful mountain kingdom of Lesotho is highly recommended.  The track is very rough, rocky and steep and a 4x4 vehicle is required.
