Johannesburg & Pretoria

South Africa's largest city and its administrative capital.

Johannesburg was founded on the discovery of gold in the late 1890's and has since grown into Africa's major commercial centre with a vitality all of its own.  It is the largest city in the world not situated on a river, lake or coastline.  To the south of Johannesburg lies the sprawling township of Soweto (a shortening of SOuth WEst TOwnship) which is a 'must see' on a locally guided half day tour.  Visit the street where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu lived and one of the previously illegal drinking taverns, or 'shabeens'.

Pretoria, 50km to the north of 'Jozi', is a prettier city, particularly when the jacaranda are in bloom around October.  The magnificent Union Buildings sit on top of Meintjeskop overlookingn the city and it was here that in 1994 Nelson Mandela addressed the nation after his inauguration.
