Pretoria or Johannesburg to the Waterberg and

MADIKWE GAME RESERVE
Madikwe Game
Reserve lies on the north western border of South Africa
with Botswana. This is the fourth largest reserve in
South Africa and is malaria free. It was created with
the re-introduction of over 10,000 wild animals and is
once again home to white and black rhino, buffalo,
elephant, lion and wild dog. There is a daily flight
from Johannesburg or by road you must allow about 4.5 to
5 hours. A safari can easily be combined with a stay at
the fabulous resort of Sun City or one of the delightful
and restful country hotels in the Magaliesberg Hills.

The majestic Baobab tree is known as
the ‘up side down’ tree due to its peculiar shape. It can reach
to about 25m in height, with trunk diameters of up to 10m.

The African or Black Buffalo grazes on
grass and
stays in herds. It is generally a shy animal but also
acknowledged as being one of the most dangerous
big game animals.

MAKWETI SAFARI LODGE
Set in the Welgevonden Game Reserve, the main lodge is built of
natural rock and from the teak deck there are superb views over the
Makweti Gorge. Accommodation is provided for just 12 guests in
secluded thatch and stone chalets, each decorated with beautiful antiques and rich timbers. All have indoor and outdoor showers,
Victorian bath, fireplace and a private deck overlooking the African bushveld. Candlelit dinners are served in the formal dining room or
under a starry sky in the outdoor boma. Other guest facilities
include swimming pool, library, bar, lounge and a large sundeck. The
reserve covers 33,000 hectares and a wide variety of game can be
seen by open safari vehicle or on foot, always with an experienced
ranger.
MARATABA
Set in the foothills of the majestic Waterberg Mountains with a
landscape of 23,000 hectares encompassing plains, bushveld, rivers
and gorges, Marataba is an exclusive private concession in the
Marakele National Park. To be seen are the ‘Big 5’, various other
animals and exceptional birding. The main lodge has a bar, library
housed in a stone tower and affording a birds-eye view of the
surrounding scenery, lounges, dining room and outdoor dining boma.
The fifteen beautifully appointed suites are an intriguing mix of
canvas and stone and each has its own private deck and outside
shower. The lodge is owned and operated by the highly respected
Hunter family.
ENTABENI GAME RESERVE
The award winning 10,000 hectare reserve is in the Waterberg and
split into two areas amidst spectacular scenery. On the higher area
in open grasslands are 3 lodges and on the lower area, connected by
a steep mountain ravine, are 3 lodges set in African bushveld.
Accommodation is of a high standard and ranges from Kingfisher
and Earthsong lodges to the more simple Wildside
tented camp. Activities include game viewing by open safari vehicle,
nature walks, picnics, bush sundowners, horse riding and
exhilarating scenic helicopter trips over the reserve with breakfast
on Hanglip Mountain! Charges are applicable for some of the
activities. Children are made very welcome.
JACI'S
Set on the banks of the Groot Marico River, Safari
Lodge camp
is curved around a termite mound and has 8 bedrooms with a private
viewing deck and an exclusive 2 bedroom suite. All are built using a
combination of thatched roofs and stone and canvas walls, creating a
African ‘tented’ feel. Tree Lodge has 8 ‘tree houses’ built on
stilts up to 6 metres above the ground. Raised wooden walkways,
suspended in the forest canopy, connect with the main lodge.
Children are made very welcome. A daily scheduled air service
operates from and to Johannesburg O. R. Tambo Airport.
BUFFALO RIDGE SAFARI LODGE
Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge has 8 thatched suites, each with its own
viewing deck, offering a very private experience. The central lodge
is accessed across a wooden bridge that crosses a ravine surrounded
by rock figs. The lodge is equipped with upper and lower viewing
decks and a swimming pool area. Game drives in open safari vehicles,
exciting bush walking trails, tracking, stargazing the amazing night
sky, bush dining, birding and botanical interests are all
accompanied by well trained and informative rangers who are able to
interpret the many fascinating encounters whilst on safari. Prolific
wildlife and birdlife to be seen.
MADIKWE SAFARI LODGE
The lodge which opened in November 2004 is part of the respected CC
Africa group and is set between two rolling hills overlooking rich
game-filled plains. It has three camps – East Camp with seven
suites, North Camp with five suites and West Camp with four suites,
all of which are air-conditioned.
Beautifully furnished and have a
private plunge pool and decking. Guest areas feature shaded outdoor
seating on covered decks, outdoor bomas for dining under the stars
and a safari shop. Activities include drives by open safari vehicles
to view the prolific game and bird life, guided nature walks and
bush meals. Families are welcome.
ETALI
Accommodation is in 8 well-appointed suites with private decks and
plunge pools, and inside/outside showers each set apart for total
privacy in its own bushveld domain.
Cuisine is a contemporary fusion
of traditional African with an Asian twist. Meals are light and
healthy with lots of fresh seasonal and organically grown
vegetables, fruit and herbs. There is no set menu as the ‘chef
extraordinaire’ selects only the best local produce daily to work
his magic. Expertly conducted game drives and walks are offered,
along with an extraordinary spa and wellness facility. There is also
‘state of the art’ star-gazing equipment, a gym and steam room.
MATEYA SAFARI LODGE
This lodge offers exceptional standards for the sophisticated
traveller in the sense that nothing has been overlooked – from the
safari travel bag to the impressive South African and French wine
collection of 8,000 bottles. Another ‘plus’ is that on game viewing
drives each safari vehicle is restricted to a maximum of 4 guests
and this allows for the guest’s choice of time, length and
destination of adventures. There are 5 individually designed
thatched suites each with a private pool and views over the
frequented watering hole and vast plains. Facilities include a
library filled with African literature, spacious lounge leading onto
an outdoor terrace, gym, health therapist and Jacuzzi.
MAKANYANE
Situated on private land within Madikwe Game Reserve, Makanyane
Safari Lodge offers exquisite accommodation in 8 luxury suites,
glass-walled on
3 sides and hidden into the lush riverside forest. The beautiful
main lodge offers a secluded pool, library and gym. There is also a
secluded bush spa offering massage and aromatherapy. Outdoor
breakfasts, and exquisite
dinners around a small fire out in the bush can be arranged. As well
daily game drives, and optional walks, there are 2 hides, one beside
a warthole and another overlooking the game-rich plains; the upper
deck of which can even be transformed for a luxury sleep-over to
observe even closer the sounds and experiences of the African bush
at night
MADIKWE HILLS LODGE
At the edge of the Marico River, this lodge is set under a grove of
Tamboti and Marula trees. The ten glass-fronted, air-conditioned
suites are ingeniously located amongst age-old boulders. Each has
its own private deck with plunge pool and views out over the
reserve. There is also a family suite which is ideal for families as
the lodge welcomes children and they have their own activity
programme. Game viewing drives are undertaken in the early morning
and late afternoon. For the energetic mid-morning guided game walks
are offered. Breakfast is served on the open deck and dinner in the
boma. For relaxation there is a swimming pool, gym and health spa. |
