:: SKELETON COAST

The Skeleton Coast is wild, desolate, uninhabited and stunningly beautiful. As this part of the coast is still a protected area, Wilderness Safaris offer a unique opportunity for tourism to a region that has roaring sand dunes, vast plains, towering canyons, mountains, salt pans and seal colonies.

SKELETON COAST CAMP
Experience this wonderful landscape on a 4 or 5-day fly-in safari from Windhoek which takes you to the private sector in the extreme northern third of the National Park. Whilst on safari all meals, drinks and activities are included.

The flying time from Windhoek is approximately 2.5 hrs. The camp is built up on a wooden decks on an island in the Khumib River. It has 5 walk-in Meru safari-style tents each with en suite facilities and an overhead fan powered by a solar panel. From the central lounge, bar and dining area there are views of the desert and in fair weather meals are served in an open eating area under an ancient leadwood tree.

Guests are requested to use water sparingly and due to the water shortage there are no laundry facilities.

Sightseeing excursions are undertaken each day, usually leaving camp after breakfast and maybe spending the whole day exploring the surrounding area with a picnic lunch being provided. You will visit the vast open plains, canyons, roaring sand dunes, lichen fields, shipwrecks, Cape Fur seal colonies, Himba villages, spectacular coastline and fresh water springs. You may see wildlife including seals, oryx, desert elephant, springbok, ostrich, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, and, on occasions, cheetah and lion. Bird watching is also good with many of the Namibian endemic species to be seen.

Transport to cover the extraordinary terrain is by 4 x 4 Land Rovers. This is a true desert experience, where the focus is on ecology of the desert and its wonderful scenery. There may be opportunities to view game, but the desert, by its very nature cannot host a large concentration of wildlife.

It is possible to combine the ‘Best of Namibia’ safari or Serra Cafema or Palmwag Rhino Camp with a stay at the Skeleton Coast Camp
