:: BATTLEFIELDS

The main battlefield sites are at Blood River where the battle between the Zulu & Boer took place in 1838; Isandlwana & Rorkes Drift – where the British did battle with the Zulu in 1879;Spionkop where in 1890 British & Boer troops clashed and at Talana where in 1899 the British again fought the Boer.

Holidays to South Africa with African Pride

There are also interesting towns associated with these battles such as Ladysmith where the British forces were besieged for 118 days; Colenso, the site of a famous battle of the same name in December 1899; Mooi River where you can visit the site of the General Hospital and the area where Winston Churchill was captured in 1899 when the armoured train on which he was travelling was derailed. The long and tiring drive between the Battlefields or Drakensberg Mountains to the game reserves in the Kruger National Park area can now be broken at Dawson’s Game & Trout Lodge located near Barberton.
